A spill. A smear. A smudge. A tear.

‘Beautiful Oops! the Musical’ is based on Barney Saltzberg’s award winning, best-selling book, Beautiful Oops! The musical champions imagination, play, and the courage to express oneself, and shows young children how every mistake is an opportunity to make something beautiful. It’s about turning off that inner critic that clamours for perfection, and the freedom to be creative and follow your curiosity wherever it goes. American award winning playwright Austin Zumbro honours the signature colours and style of Saltzberg’s work as his whimsical creatures-actors discover they are having a less-than-perfect day – Oops!

Ages 5 – 10

Casting Details
We encourage adult actors of all races, ages and gender identities to audition for this production.

A Note on Casting: All characters are not literal representations of these animals but rather, carry an energy similar to their namesake. Think 75% human, 25% animal. They walk, talk, and act like humans – but every now and then a physical behavior might leak out that’s more true to their “animal”. For instance when Bunny loses her cool perhaps she starts hopping in a panicked frenzy, or when penguin is in a hurry maybe she doesn’t just walk but begins to waddle.

Bunny (Alto) – The panicky perfectionist! Bunny just wants everything to be ok, to be beautiful, to be perfect! They act as the ringleader of the group. Though at first they appear to be the most collected and wise – it turns out they are the one with the biggest lesson to learn.

Elephant (Baritone) – A worrisome, stuffy, (at times sassy), artistic type. They think art should be sophisticated and fine and strive to emulate their idols of the french impressionist era. But alas, they are an elephant and lack the grace and finesse needed. Can be a handful, and a bit of a clutz. But a lovable one.

Alligator (Mezzo/ Rapper) – Probably the actual wisest one of the group, but mischievous and thrives off chaos. Always has the best intentions, but makes a lot of “oops” in the process. They are a tad bit destructive, but always by accident (or is it an accident? Wink wink). They want the same end goal as everyone else, but MUCH less worried about how they get there. Also doubles as Penguins Mom – the epitome of a warm, loving mother.

Pig (Baritenor, opt. rock falsetto) – This guy just really wants a car. Is that so much to ask!? They are chaotic good in its purest form and are just here for a good time. Not the quickest on the uptake, but always says “yes, and”, and is supportive of everyone else. They will always be the life of the party. Non stop energy.

“Stage Manager”– Both the literal ASM of the show and the character within the show. A pillar of calmness and trustworthiness. They spend the show helping these wildcards navigate the unknown of making a show. Backstage they are helping the cast with typical backstage duties, and occasionally pop on stage for a line or two and song/ dance here and there.
**Please note there are no audition sides for this role, it will be cast based off the auditions from the other roles. If you are not interested in being considered for this part please indicate so on your audition form**

In addition to preparing a 1min contemporary song cut, shortlisted applicants will also be asked to learn a 20 bar cut from a song in the show. Guide vocals, backing track and sheet music will be provided prior to the audition for preparation. There will be four song cuts to select from, one for each character above. It is not mandatory to memorise the cut however we are looking for performers who can demonstrate energy and movement ability through song. There will also be a short dance call led by the choreographer. Please come dressed in comfortable attire and appropriate footwear that you can dance in.

If you are able to commit to the above schedule and are available for the auditions, please email freddochildrenstheatre@gmail.com with your CV (in PDF), a recent headshot, and the subject header: “Oops Audition [Your Name]” by 1 February 2025. Please also include your preferred audition time, we will accommodate as best we can. If you’re unavailable on the audition date, do let us know and we will provide alternative arrangements if we are able.

Please note audition slots will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis and that applicants will be contacted regardless of the outcome by 2 February 2025.
